The Revival of the Hair Clip

Top uk fashion and lifestyle blogs, Jaclyn RuthSo, hair clips are back en vogue. And my inner five year old couldn’t be happier about it.

In fact, fashionable or not, I’m going to go ahead and admit that I’ve never really stopped liking all things hair accessory and have been stylishly (or not so) rocking them probably since I was five (perhaps, aside from that short emo/goth phase I went through as a teenager, but the less said about that the better).

I have a rather embarrassing collection of cutesy floral, diamante, butterfly encrusted numbers that I just can’t bear to part with, and whether it’s been the sparkly, gem adorned, comb in trend, or the snap-back, clear resin, mini clips trend, I’ve been there for every single one.

In fact, sometimes I do find myself migrating towards the children’s hair collection in Accessorize, wondering whether I can in fact get away with those pink glitter unicorn numbers that are most certainly designed for someone half my age. As you can imagine it is my utter dismay that I now have a daughter to buy all of this stuff for, and she refuses to let me do ANYTHING to her hair. Sigh.

When pearl barrettes and larger than life sliders started appearing all over the press (and the cool kids) over the Christmas period I  was more than ready to dig out my embarrassing glitter collection, and took great glee in browsing online for as many star/ pearl/ glitter adornments as I could justify.

But if you thought this trend was limited to the festive season and were worried your hair might have to go back to the days when it didn’t get a sparkly addition each morning, then fear not because clips are still very deserving of your hair attention. If 2018 was the year of the hair scarf, then 2019 is the year of the hair clip. Trust me on this one.

Right, now that we’ve established that accessorising like a five year old is the goal, let’s discuss where to buy…

Star hair clip – Oliver Bonas (sold out but similar here)

On the high street my favourite places are Accessorize and Oliver Bonas (the gold star clip is OB and both the barrette and velvet clips are Accessorize) Although ASOS is always worth a look too.

Accessorize have always been great for hair accessories and they really jumped on this trend early. It’s also fairly affordable too. You’ll probably have seen a lot of people sporting that now insta famous pearl barrette over the last few months (I missed out on the cream style but bagged the silver instead) which was a steal at only £5.

Hair Barrette – Accessorize (sold out but similar here)

If you’re willing to spend a bit more then Oliver Bonas really do have some gorgeous styles. That shop can take all of my money to be honest, I adore everything in it! I need to give a shout out to Emily at Brick Dust and Glitter who alerted me to the star style before Christmas and I’ve had so much wear out of, and I now have my eye on this star and moon duo as seen on Hannah Gale.

Velvet slides – Accessorize (sold out, similar here)

On the more independent front I have to mention Maison Archives which is a recent Instagram discovery. They have some lovely pearl oversized clip in styles as well as the iconic Globe Trotters cities style.

And of course if money is no object then it has to be Chanel right? Where it all began.

I’ve included a few of my favourites below if you’re keen to try the trend.
