Novelty Jumpers after the Novelty?

I’m having a little argument with myself at the moment about whether Novelty fashion items can be worn after the novelty event is long since gone.

What is causing this inner debate is a certain Christmas jumper which I have quite simply fallen in love with…

The jumper in question is this one…

And the story goes something like this:

I bought this jumper for GB for Christmas, partly as a bit of a joke, partly because I was feeling festive, and partly (and most importantly) because he had hinted a month or so before that he was buying me a novelty Christmas jumper and I had a deluded vision in my head of us in matching his and hers festive sweaters looking fabulous on Christmas Day… for this very reason I deliberately didn’t buy one for myself despite really really wanting to…

Christmas Day came, GB got his red wooly number with snowmen on it, he laughed, he smiled, he thanked me, he wore it on Christmas Day, he looked super cute, I posted a photo on Facebook of him looking super cute in his red wooly number with snowmen on and everyone oohed and ahhed and cooed at how wonderful and Christmassy it all was… but unfortunately there was no Christmas jumper waiting under the tree for me.

Now I don’t tell you this so that you can feel sorry for me and sing ‘awwww’ in unison, I got many many wonderful Christmas presents this year and GB spoiled me with lots of lovely exciting things that I had no idea I was getting and were wonderful surprises… the only reason I include this vital mis-communication is because it is crucial to the story and to understanding how I have ended up in this delicate situation of desperately wanting to wear a red wooly jumper with snowmen on almost a month after Christmas has past.

You see this was one particular trend that I really really wanted to try, in fact not just try but own… I really think that I could have rocked this trend and I almost feel cheated out of it. All of the opportunties that I had to wear a Christmas jumper in the run up to Christmas are now gone and yet I don’t feel that I have effectively exercised my fashion know how on this one. I had already envisioned exactly how I would wear my novelty jumper and what with so when one didn’t arrive it was as if a whole host of outfits which had been carefully stored in my head for the last month were being diminished without ever having had the chance to be seen!

For GB of course it was not nearly such a thought provoking item, he enjoyed it, he wore it all of Christmas Day and he took it off and then I think he became a little baffled as to what to do with it from that point on…

And so on the 29th of December during a lazy afternoon at Chez GB I put it on… and at that moment the red wooly number with snowmen on became a little bit less GB’s and a little bit more mine. With one wearing I fell in love with it and firmly adopted it as my own… ok ok I know what you are thinking, I was a little devious giving GB a gift which ultimately I wanted for myself but even GB admitted it looked better on me, and while he couldnt really pull off a red snowman jumper beyond Christmas Day, I am ever so slightly confident that I might just be able to…

There are a few reasons why I like this jumper so much…

1. Its the cosiest and comfiest jumper I have ever worn and what more do you want from a jumper in Winter other than to be comfortable and warm.

2. It’s baggy – I am having a bit of a moment for baggy jumpers right now, they cover my love handles, can make a pair of skinny jeans and killer heels look chic without being too dressed up and after a big meal you can undo your top button and no one will notice… yes baggy jumpers are good.

3. Its red and has snowmen on it! It makes me smile just looking at it, who doesnt love a red jumper with snowmen on?

And so I bring you to my dilemma – seeing as I love this jumper so much and simply can’t bear for it to be packed away in the wardrobe for a whole year before anyone (me) gets to wear it again… can I be so bold as to wear it on a regular ol’ January day? I’m having a similar issue with other such pieces in my wardrobe such as glittery boots, silver lame maxi skirts and sequin blazers but these are a little easier to be adapted to a Spring wardrobe than a bright red wooly jumper!

I’d love to hear your thoughts but I’m really hoping the answer is yes because I would quite happily like to steal this novelty jumper from GB and claim it as my own everyday jumper…
