I’ve got a full proof formula for party dressing when you’re a tired Mum with absolutely no time or energy to get glammed up, and no occasion that doesn’t involve bringing your baby with you and spending most of your time picking toys up off the floor and having food thrown in your face.
Yup, it goes a little something like this…
1. Take one sparkly festive jumper…
2. Add the only pair of jeans that still fit you/don’t have baby puke on them…
3. Finish with a pair of fancy (yet comfy) flats
(sparkly clutch and statement earrings optional)
Easy, no? In all seriousness though, dressing for the party season has been a different affair this year. For starters my only ‘Christmas party’ has been our NCT get together (which frankly I was as excited about as I ever got for a work Christmas do) and while thinking of what to wear over the festive season, I’ll admit that I’ve committed the cardinal fashion sin of considering comfort and practicality first – in the back of my head always thinking ‘could I carry a baby around all day in this?’ and ‘Will that withstand the – baby food thrown across the table – test?’. I bought one dress (mainly for a December wedding we were attending) which will double up as my party gladrags this year (post on that coming soon), and the rest of the holidays I plan to spend in comfy PJ’s, cosy knits and the odd OTT accessory.
Jumper – Joanie Clothing | Jeans – Topshop
Flats – Boden (last season) | Bag and Coat – Vintage | Earrings – H&M
But all the same I couldn’t let the festive season pass without adding a little sparkle to my wardrobe and it came in the form of this gorgeous ‘Golden Girl’ sweater from Joanie Clothing – the ideal stylish festive jumper for those who don’t want to wear anything overly Christmassy. Holly Willoughby obviously saw my recent Instagram post and decided to copy me (of course!) because she wore the very same one on her final This Morning before Christmas (with a gold sequin skirt – I now need me one of those!) so typically, just as I went to blog about it, it sold out. But check the website for lots of other cute and stylish slogan sweaters (there’s currently 40% off) – I’d say size up though, mine was quite snug and rather cropped.
This is what I plan to wear on Christmas Eve, and actually for me this year, it’s the perfect party outfit. The jumper keeps me feeling suitably glam thanks to its sparkly lurex look, and these gold sequinned flats from Boden a few seasons back are still a firm favourite and always dress up an otherwise simple outfit. But it’s not too dressy, means I’m still comfortable and allows me to concentrate fully on ensuring Evie has a wonderful first Christmas, which is my main priority.

If you too are struggling with how to tackle party wear when you don’t have much to dress up for and have messy little hands ready to ruin your new dress, my top tips are as follows;
Choose a statement piece and let that shine
Whether it’s a festive knit or a tulle skirt, one statement piece is really all you need and means that the rest of your outfit can be pretty simple and you can still wear your favourite fail safe pieces. Think tulle skirt with a simple black knit or jeans with a sequin jumper.
Don’t be afraid to wear jeans
If you feel your best in a pair of comfy jeans then let those be the starting piece of your outfit and build your party look around those. You’ll be surprised at how different the jeans you wear day in day out can look when you add a pair of heels and a glittery top.
Accessorize to the max
A few key accessories will take your outfit into party territory easily. Add statement earrings, a metallic headband, oodles of jewellery or a pair of stand out shoes.
